Many times I paint over an older painting, partly because it doesn’t work and partly because I like building layers and revealing bits of what’s underneath.
This 16X20 painting ( a small portion is pictured above) started as a painting called “Really Blue Heron”. Herons are a source of wonder and delight for me, and I wanted to capture their effect on me. But the composition didn’t work, as much as I liked the form of the heron itself. So I decided to paint over it. As it happened, I had just been spending time watching the astonishing series “Our Planet”, one of the most stunningly beautiful, fascinating and awe-inspiring visual experiences I have ever had. As I began painting over Blue Heron, my subconscious, with this recent visual influence of the film, took over. Which I realized after I was done.
